#005 GAD BA4: Game Re-Design - Research

Continuing on in the group we had the the contextual studies lesson, myself, David and Dominic teamed up to tackle the game re-design project. We all agreed that a lot of groups would choose Medal of Honor, so wanted to do something different from that. The next most common game we guessed people would choose is Fatal Frame II, so we also wanted to stay away from that. The left us with The Portopia Serial Murder Case, which to be honest sounded very dull, Flow, and Moshi Monsters.

Having been told that we can base our re-design very loosely on the original, the three of us knew pretty much instantly that Moshi Monsters was our best bit. To sum it up, customisable monsters controlled by players... What's not to like? Quoting from Moshi Monsters:
"Moshi Monsters is an online world of adoptable pet monsters aimed at boys and girls aged 6–12, with 65 million registered users in 150 territories worldwide.Children choose from one of six virtual pet monsters that they can create, name, and nurture. Once their pet has been customized, players can navigate their way around Monstro City, taking the daily puzzle challenge to earn ‘Rox’ (virtual currency), playing games, personalizing their room, reading stories and communicating with friends in a safe environment."
So, how could we move this into something a bit more... Mature. For a start, the age range would have to be changed, at least 16+. Players could choose between 6 monsters, we wanted a lot more. Customisation seems to be one of the main points, giving the player a sense of uniqueness, which is something I think we are definitely going to work with... Mass customisation. All in all, the few aspects we are going to retain are: Customisation, Online Gameplay and Nurturing. It's not much, but with such a loose base it means we can expand to pretty much any game we want.
