The pursuit of creating the perfect immersive coherent world is a no small thing, considering the many different paths taken over the past decade by games developers to create a game world where players can essentially completely lose themselves. Factors such as quality of graphics, storylines and realistic logic all play a heavy part on creating a coherent world. What I will be investigating is does a coherent game world depend on the consistent quality of visual graphics as well as or realistic logic.
What is a coherent world?
- Runescape (Fantasy MMORPG based in a medieval realm).
- World Of Warcraft (Fantasy MMORPG based on the planet Azeroth).
- Battlefield 3 (FPS based in multiple countries including Iraq, America and Russia).
- Command & Conquer (RTS based in a modern day world).
What does “consistent quality of visual graphics” mean?
- Seamless graphic styles and quality through multiple zones.
- Maintain style of graphics and models through the entire game.
- Characters fit the environment and environment fits characters.
What is realistic logic in games?
- Every action has a reaction.
- Laws of physics.
How does a coherent world effect the player?
- Immersion (an immersive game is a game that envelops the player into a state where the game relates highly to reality).
- Spatial Presence (The game builds its own set of rules in the brain, then subconsciously entwined with the rules of reality to a degree).
- Breaking of simple logic or the law of physics can disrupt the players immersion.
Does the consistent quality of visual graphics create a coherent world?
- Age of Empires.
- RAGE (High quality environment and characters, low poly objects).
- LA Noire (Lower quality graphics due to the highly rendered facial motion capture).
- Low quality 3D asset within a game that is a high end graphic game breaks the coherency of the game world and in turn breaks player immersion.
What part does game logic play in the task of creating a coherent world?
- Runescape (Skills within the game are based on real world skills)
- Battlefield 3 (Physics Engine, realistic reactions to environmental destruction)
Can a coherent world be created without consistent visual graphics or realistic logic?
- Classic arcade games (they have relatively poor graphics and little to no logic).
Consistent quality of visual output and realistic logics pretty much go hand in hand. Without one or the other it is difficult to create and maintain a coherent game world that can immerse the player into the game.
